Social media has created a platform where writers can share quite personally. Because of this, it\u2019s possible for readers to see something of the actual lives and inner workings of the people whose work they consume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This isn\u2019t\nentirely new, but it just seems to be a lot more common. Some people like to be\nprivate. Some share. Some over-share. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some\npresent a manicured version of themselves to the world: their glittering image.\nOthers are more authentic and let it all hang out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally,\nI think it\u2019s good for your readers to get to know you a little bit. After all,\nyou are asking them for two things: their time and their trust. If you read my\nwork, I have taken up some of your time, which for many people is a limited\nresource. Hopefully, you\u2019ll get something back in return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I\u2019m\nalso asking you to trust me: you have to feel that my opinions are my own, that\nthey are honestly held, that where I\u2019m stating or reporting facts I have acted\nwith diligence, and that I\u2019m not being influenced by undisclosed payments or\nfavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, if you get to know me a bit, even if it\u2019s through social media, this strengthens this relationship and better assists you to decide whether reading my work is going to be productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over two years ago I shared on my blog about getting divorced. In some ways, I quite like the abrupt biographies you used to\nfind in old books: \u2018XXXX XXXXX is a novelist who lives in London.\u2019 But, then\nagain, I\u2019m fascinated to know more about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, a\ncouple of questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How much\nare you able to separate a writer\u2019s personality from their work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Does\nknowing more about the context of the writing, and specifically about the\nwriter (their background, personality, motivations, preferences), help the\nreader understand the text better?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We live in an age of sharing.
