Biodynamic Marlborough (NZ) producer Seresin is making some pretty serious wine these days, and with this thrilling line-up of Pinot Noirs from the 2007 vintage, they\u2019ve demonstrated that the Marlborough region deserves to be taken more seriously for this variety. It seems that in the right hands, Marlborough Pinot Noir can stand alongside top Pinots from Central Otago, Martinborough and Waipara. I was really excited by these wines: they\u2019re all superb.<\/p>\n

Seresin Rachel Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough
\n<\/strong> 14% alcohol. Wild yeast ferment, 40% new oak, spends 9 months in barrel. Dark, intense, brooding dark cherry, raspberry and blackberry nose with some meaty, spicy notes adding complexity, and some violet\/floral notes adding perfume. The palate is focused and concentrated, with delicious savoury, spicy, mineral notes under the cherry and plum fruit. Rich but fresh with a subtle bitter twist and good acidity. Superb. 94\/100<\/p>\n

Seresin Leah Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough
\n<\/strong> Three vineyards blended together, spending 11 months in French oak, of which 20% is new. 13.5% alcohol. Slightly murky: not clear. Beautfully balanced and focused with fresh, textured cherry fruit and a hint of spicy meatiness. There\u2019s real elegance and purity to this wine, which is concentrated but well balanced. Plummy tang adding a hint of bitterness, which helps keep things savoury. This will likely age well. 93\/100<\/p>\n

Seresin Tatou Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough
\n<\/strong> From deep gravel soils at the western end of the Wairau Valley. 50% new oak. 14% alcohol. Very fresh and savoury with lovely vivid dark cherry and raspberry nose, with some sweetness. The palate is very fresh with savoury raspberry, cherry and plum fruit back up by appealing herbal, mineral undertones. Real personality here. Quite structured with some chocolatey richness and olive notes. Perhaps even a bit Syrah-like? Quite serious. 93\/100<\/p>\n

Seresin Home Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough
\n<\/strong> 13.5% alcohol. From the home vineyard, 30% new oak. Lovely full aromatic nose of plums, raspberries and cherries with a hint of meatiness. The palate is concentrated and intense with sweet plum and cherry fruit, nice savoury meaty notes and some spiciness. A rich, concentrated Pinot Noir that\u2019s quite serious. 93\/100<\/p>\n

Seresin Raupo Creek Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough, New Zealand
\n<\/strong> 14% alcohol, wild yeast ferment, 15 months in barrel, 40% new oak. Beautifully aromatic plum, dark cherry, meat and spice nose with a lovely floral character. Complex, deep and beguiling. The palate is focused and concentrated with lovely meaty, spicy, dark cherry and raspberry fruit. Finishes spicy with some citrussy acidity. Expressive and concentrated with a slight wildness to it. Exciting. 94\/100<\/p>\n

Seresin Sun & Moon Pinot Noir 2007 Marlborough
\n<\/strong> 14.5% alcohol. Wild ferment, 80% Raupo Creek, 20% home vineyard. Beautifully aromatic with rich ripe cherry and plum nose, as well as a fine, spicy, meaty character, together with some delicately sappy notes and floral overtones. The palate is densely flavoured and yet still quite light in feel \u2013 a wonderful paradox. Lively cherry and raspberry fruit are backed up by good acidity and some fine spiciness. Beautiful precision to this wine. 95\/100<\/p>\n
