It’s decomposed granite under Hutton soil with a bit of koffieklip. Reenen has experience making wine in the Rhône, and these Syrahs taste pretty Rhône-like to me. It’s always exciting coming across wines like these, which exceed expectations in a big way.

Boschkloof Syrah 2013 Stellenbosch, South Africa
A mix of SH99 and SH21 clone. Very floral with cherries and raspberries, faint meatiness and some violet. Vivid juicy pepper cherry fruit on the palate with some mineral and olive notes. Lovely. 93/100

Boschkloof Epilogue 2013 Stellenbosch, South Africa
Just SH99 clone Syrah. Very floral and expressive with pretty black cherry and plum fruit, and some meat and olive notes. Juicy and fine on the palate with nice elegance and purity. This has a lovely freshness to it, and it shows great restraint. 94/100

Boschkloof Conclusion 2013 Stellenbosch, South Africa
54% Cabernet Franc, 17% Merlot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot. Complex nose of eucalyptus and spice, blackcurrants and blackberry. The palate is taut and spicy with density, precision and good structure. A fabulous effort with a long future ahead of it. 94/100

Find these wines with wine-searcher.com

I was so impressed by these three wines, presented to me by Reenen Borman (above), who’s been winemaker here since 2010.
