The wines of Château Romanin, Provence

Château Romanin, 13210 St Remy de Provence, France
E-mail: contact@romanin.com Tel: 00 33 (0)4 90 92 45 87

Château Romanin is located on the northern slope of the Alpilles, the mountain bordering the Mediterranean in Provence. There are some 58 hectares of vineyards on the property, made up of the usual southern French red and white varieties. It’s been certified biodynamic (with Demeter) since 1998.

The wines are universally of a very high standard: they’re made in quite a modern, fruit-forward style, but there’s some seriousness behind all the fruit. The difference between the various cuvées is in the origin of the grapes and the oak regimen.

Château Romanin ‘Coeur Quartus’ 2001 Les Baux de Provence
New oak used here. Ripe, full, spicy nose with a menthol edge to the rich dark fruits. The palate is rich and spicy with great depth. Quite an elegant wine despite the density. Classy oak use. A serious effort. Very good/excellent 93/100

Château Romanin 2002 Les Baux de Provence
A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet and Mourvèdre. Dense, brooding spicy nose of dark fruits. The palate is quite silky and rich with the vivid fruit disguising some firm tannins. Forward, but good depth and promise for the future. Very good/excellent 92/100

Château Romanin 2001 Les Baux de Provence
Sweet liqueur-like blackcurrant fruits dominate the nose, which is lush and pure. The palate is soft, and dominated by sweet, lush ripe fruit. Good concentration, with spicy dark fruits on the finish. Lovely. Very good/excellent 91/100

Château Romanin ‘Chapelle de Romanin’ 2002 Les Baux de Provence
Contains seven different grape varieties. Lovely perfumed red and black fruits nose, with a liqueur-like richness. The palate is full and spicy with nice density of forward fruit. Spicy depth to the finish – a nice wine. Very good/excellent 90/100

Château Romainin ‘Jean Le Troubadour’ Rouge 2004 Vin de Pays des Bouches de Rhône
A blend of Syrah and Grenache from young vines. Vivid depth of colour. Savoury spicy twist to the fresh red fruits on the nose. The concentrated palate has some fruit sweetness, nice richness and a savoury, spicy structure. A lovely primary sort of wine. Very good+ 89/100

Château Romanin Blanc 2003 Les Baux de Provence
Fresh, slightly herby white with nice density and a spicy finish. Very good+ 87/100

Château Romanin Rosé 2004 Les Baux de Provence
Very light in colour. Fresh sweet strawberry nose. The palate is fresh with nice weight, good acid and a subtle, herby edge. Good effort. Very good+ 88/100
