The wines of Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt

Schlossgut Marienlay, D-54317 Morscheid im Ruwertal, Germany Tel: +49 (0) 650091690

A consistently good line up from this German producer, the highpoint provided by the two excellent Auslese wines. I am not a regular consumer of German wines but I would be happy to take any of these examples home with me.

Josephshöfer Riesling Kabinett Monopole 1998
Bright and intense with appelly acidity. Currently quite simple.

Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett 1997
Smoky nose; full, rich and spicy on the palate. Very good.

Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 1997
Herby, vegetal nose. On the palate this is mineralic with nice sweetness and good acid balance. Good.

Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spätlese 1996
Lovely nose, great balance and complexity. Apple like-acidity. Very good.

Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese 1988
Huge nose with minerals, apples and honey. Complex and delicious, this is really super stuff.

Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Auslese Long Gold Capsule 1989
Enticing mineral-laden nose. This wine is spicy, rich, full, lively and exciting. Very good.

Scharzhofberger Riesling Eiswein 1995
Rather odd edge to the nose, but delicious otherwise. Spicy, complex and sweet, with good balancing acid.
