John and Jennifer Joslin founded Mud House in the late
1990s. After making money from business in the UK and Belgium, they
had spent 6 years touring the world in their yacht. Then they
discovered New Zealand and decided that making wine was the thing for
them. Their Marlborough winery has grown to 50 000 cases annually, and
the wines are up there with the best from the region: I was
particularly impressed by their Pinot Noirs.

Mud House Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Marlborough, New
Zealand
Striking full, perfumed nose marries tropical fruit with green
herbal characters. Bold, concentrated striking palate with fresh green
limey fruit and good acidity. A fresh, full-on style. Very good+
89/100 (£11)
Mud House White Swan Sauvignon Blanc 2005
Marlborough, New Zealand
Complex, forward nose with fine, expressive, grassy fruit on top
of some richer, tropical notes. Broad, super-concentrated palate which
is still quite expressive with nice complexity and freshness. Very
good/excellent 91/100 (£15)
Mud House Unwooded Chardonnay 2005 Marlborough, New
Zealand
Fresh yet rich at the same time, with rounded herb-tinged fruit.
Quite soft and rich textured, this is an approachable wine with a
rounded finish. Very good+
87/100 (£11)
Mud House White Swan Reserve Chardonnay 2005 Marlborough, New
Zealand
Bold, complex, nutty and toasty. Very rich and full with some
tropical fruit and a bready, subtly oaky character. Good concentration
here; it’s a nice style of Chardonnay. Very good/excellent 91/100 (£13)
Mud House Riesling 2005 Marlborough, New Zealand
Limey, bright and fresh with some sweetness. The palate is rich
and rounded, with the high acidity countered by some residual sugar.
Good concentration but if I’m being fussy it’s a tiny bit awkward
right now. Very good+ 88/100 (£11)
Mud House Pinot Gris 2005 Marlborough, New Zealand
Rich, full, fruity and soft, with a relatively thick, soft
texture. Quite appealing. Very good+ 87/100 (£13)
Mud House Pinot Noir Rosé 2005 Marlborough, New Zealand
Very light pink in colour. Lovely soft strawberry fruit with a
herbal edge and good acidity. Nicely balanced and quite dry. Very
good+ 88/100 (£11)
Mud House Merlot 2004 Marlborough, New Zealand
Supple herby edge to the red fruits nose. Fresh sappy fruit on the
palate with a bit of greenness. Nice stuff in a light style. Probably
not worth £15, though. Very good+ 85/100 (£15)
Mud House Vineyard Selection Pinot Noir 2005 Marlborough, New
Zealand
Fantastic open cherry and red berry nose with spicy notes. Great
purity here. The palate shows a good concentration of lovely, full,
but well balanced cherry and berry fruit with some spiciness.
Brilliant fruit quality and balance here: a delicious New World-style
Pinot. Very good/excellent 92/100 (£11)
Mud House Black Swan Reserve Pinot Noir 2003
Marlborough, New Zealand
A perfumed nose that shows quite full, generous red berry fruit.
Some elegance here. The palate has richly structured berry fruit with
some nice freshness. Lovely. Very good/excellent 92/100 (£19)
