Zalto glasses: just beautiful

One thing that true wine nuts get excited about, apart from wine, is the topic of wine glasses.
Riedel are the best known wine glass manufacturer - they make a large range, with specific shapes favouring particular styles of wine. They also make different levels of quality, ranging up to the hand blown Sommeliers, which cost a fortune.

I've recently come across another glass manufacturer whose glasses I really love: Zalto (their website is here). These are truly beautiful hand blown glasses that are amazingly light and delicate, yet quite flexible and resilient, too. I have three of them: the universal white, the universal red and the Burgundy glass. They're expensive at around £25 each, but for such quality, they're excellent value, especially compared with the cost of the Riedel Sommeliers.

Quite right. I felt in need of a glass revolution and ordered nearly £200 quidsworth of all kinds of different glasses online a couple of weeks ago and was insanely impatient about their arrival. Everyone I mentioned my new glasses to presumed I was talkign about spectacles though. And imagine my disappointment after I had them delivered to the office, taxi-ed them home, and opened them one Friday evening only to find the website had stuck the wrong label on my order and sent me beer glasses by accident.

Victoria, that's a funny but painful story - what did you go for?

Well, I've already been through Riedel then moved onto Dartington Crystal. I prefer the DC - I think they flatter the wine more and they're more sensually appealing too. But the DC ones keep cracking in the sink, even though I'm very careful. And they're not cheap. So I thought I'd try Schott's Zwiesel. I've gone for their tasting glass, and also the Spiegelau tasting glass, because I thought I ought. Still to be properly tested but I wish I had looked more carefully at the size before ordering as they're a bit squinny. Also, the Zwiesel Diva white wine, Diva water/bordeaux goblets and their Vina goblets. Some of them (the Diva white wine ones) are quite ugly. But I may begin to find them beautiful if they work for the wine.

I'm a Riedel man through and through. If only they weren't so difficult to clean!
