Planeta Cerasuolo di Vittoria: an elegant Sicilian red

Back in February 2009 I visited Sicilian producer Planeta (report here). It was a great visit, and I particularly enjoyed the Cerusuolo from Vittoria, a blend of Nero d’Avola with the bright, fresh Frappato variety. I even went out and bought some afterwards, which for a wine writer deluged by samples is a true endorsement.

Planeta Cerusuolo di Vittoria 2007 Sicily, Italy
13% alcohol. A blend of the Nero d’Avola and Frappato varieties. Lovely fresh, sweet aromatic nose of cherries, berries and subtle green sappiness, as well as a twist of ginger spice. The palate is sweetly fruited and elegant with a smooth texture and nice freshness. There’s a bit of spicy bite to the otherwise sweet cherry fruit. It’s a Pinot Noir-like and Grenache-like red with real appeal. 92/100 (Waitrose £14.99)
