I currently have a few decent South African wines in the tasting queue. Here’s one that yielded a good deal of pleasure: ripe and modern, but not spoofy.
Englebrecht Els Vineyard Proprietor’s Blend 2007 Stellenbosch
15% alcohol. A complex blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Shiraz, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Rich, intense and concentrated with sweet blackcurrant and blackberry fruit. It’s fresh with an attractive gravelly, subtly green edge. Rich and sweet with nice definition, showing lush fruit but also some gravelly depth. Quite a serious new world take on the Bordeaux blend. 91/100

Love that wine and I enjoyed your take on it; ‘quite a serious new world take on the Bordeaux blend’ 🙂 The Engelbrecht Els 2007 also won Double Gold in Veritas Awards 2009.
