A serious Austrian red: Moric Blaufrankisch

I do like Austrian wines. Much of my attention is taken by Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, two varieties that Austria just does brilliantly with, but Austrian reds are also really interesting, especially when winemakers hold back on the oak and extraction. This is a superb Blaufrankisch, from the Burgenland region near the Hungarian border. Elevage is in large oak, which is a good move for this sort of wine.

Weingut Moric Blaufrankisch 2008 Burgenland, Austria
12.5% alcohol. Spicy mineral nose is fresh and peppery with bright raspberry fruit. The palate has lovely fresh fruit with savoury, spicy, mineral notes and just a hint of animal/meaty character. Fresh and cherryish with good structure: lovely wine. 93/100 (Berry Bros & Rudd £19.95)

  1. Just blogged about the 2010 vintage here http://wp.me/p20x5Y-dN

A really nice find and a good alternative to the usual touchpoints for elegance in the wine world. The dry finish is a touch unusual but worth working through.

Nice blog site by the way, well worth a browse (yours not mine)!
