I do like Austrian wines. Much of my attention is taken by Gruner Veltliner and Riesling, two varieties that Austria just does brilliantly with, but Austrian reds are also really interesting, especially when winemakers hold back on the oak and extraction. This is a superb Blaufrankisch, from the Burgenland region near the Hungarian border. Elevage is in large oak, which is a good move for this sort of wine.

12.5% alcohol. Spicy mineral nose is fresh and peppery with bright raspberry fruit. The palate has lovely fresh fruit with savoury, spicy, mineral notes and just a hint of animal/meaty character. Fresh and cherryish with good structure: lovely wine. 93/100 (Berry Bros & Rudd £19.95)
