I’m on a bit of a Languedoc roll at the moment. Here’s another really delicious, quite serious, yet well-priced wine. And it’s white.
La Chapelle de Bebian 2009 Coteaux du Languedoc, France
A blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Clairette. Very distinctive nose: fresh, minty, herby with a hint of fennel and some anise. The palate is fruity and minerally with a lovely herby aniseed character. Quite profound: a really distinctive white that’s rich and fresh at the same time. 91/100 (£11.95 Terroirs Languedoc)

Another excellent example of the ‘Doc region. Even now, on their third owner in the last 20 years, Bebian’s vineyards have some of the most interesting assortment of vines that produce sensational wines, both red and white.
I recall visiting just after the former publisher of La Revue de Vin had purchased the winery. We tasted through wines not yet in bottle that Alain Roux had made. He was truly a mad scientist, and perhaps France’s equal to Randall Graham.
