Yesterday I attended a brilliant tasting. It was a vertical of Eben Sadie’s Columella, hosted by the man himself.
Columella is Eben’s signature wine. It’s a Syrah with a dash of Mourvedre, from five distinct terroirs in the Swartland region of South Africa. We tasted all the releases so far, from 2000 to the not-yet-released 2009. All the wines were good, but the standouts were 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. These are serious wines, and Eben is a thoughtful, talented winegrower.
I need to write up my notes, but in the interim, here’s a short film of Eben in action.

Eben rocks!! as do a few others in the Swartland, and it will be good to see you at the Swartland Revolution in November,Jamie.
Hi Jamie,
10 wines and 5 ‘Standouts’ – surely ‘Standouts’ implies 1-2 maybe, 3 max ??
good point simon – i guess the standard was just so high
