A quick post from the road – wonderful experiences

Too much to write about. Too little time. And too slow an internet connection to post photographs.

The last two days have been incredible. I have learned a great deal. I have seen three new (to me) wine regions – ones that I had heard of, tasted wines from, but not seen.

Leyda, Limari and Elqui are all very interesting, and have lots of potential for fine wine production.

Some of that potential is now being realized. Vina Leyda are making superb Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. Tabali are making some very impressive Sauvignon and Pinot Noir from a remarkable new vineyard planted on limestone near the coast in Limari.

And today I´ve been in Elqui, where Falernia and Mayu are making very smart commercial wines, and have two Syrah vineyards in particular which could make world class, high-end Syrah (we had a range of 2010 cask samples). We also went up to a high vineyard at 2000 m that was remarkable.

Now we´re staying in the mountains for the night and it is truly beautiful.

  1. So. Liking Chile now? Next time Tim Atkin asks a silly question, don’t just leave a silly answer!
By the way… stay there. It is soooo cold here right now.
