A night of very fine bottles

Had a lovely evening with friends old and new last night. Wine geeks one and all. And the bottles came fast and furious. No time to take notes. We tasted blind, which is always fun. Not terribly accurately, but with enthusiasm and curiosity. The theme was ‘ssshhhh’. My impressions as I remember them, beginning with the wine above. This was an early Manzanilla Pasada, no 10, from Equipo Navazos. It was given to me as a gift years ago by the late Lisa Shara-Hall. It was complex and quite thrilling.

Montilla Moriles Fino from PX. A first for me. Tasted lovely, but very different to Palomino.

Grappin’s Saint-Aubin 2015. A bit closed, and we got nowhere close, alas.

I was amazed by this. A Bourgogne, but tastes Grand Cru-ish. Sublime, elegant, detailed and with real presence. Stunning.

Andreas Tscheppe’s Sauvignon Chardonnay 2017. Such a cool, textural wine.

Ah, pretty classic, this. Mikulski’s Meursault 2012. I think we were all in Burgundy, and in retrospect this was Meursault, clearly, although we hunted around a bit initially.

What a beautiful surprise. A rare wine, and a brilliant one. Pinot Meunier, still, from Champagne. Without the bubbles it’s even more mineral and there’s a subtle creaminess, too.

Jaimee Motley’s Chenin! My first chance to try one of her wines, and this was quite beautiful. Restrained with a lovely acid line and good Chenin character.

Classic claret like this never goes out of fashion. Drinking at peak, but no need to drink up. Luxurious.

Corners from Balthazar, what a treat.

Someone nailed this blind straight away. I forget who. They’ve probably forgotten too. Absolute elegance combined with nice ripe fruit.

Last but by no means least, this Texier Brézème was showing so well. Tight, meaty, bloody and delicious.

No bottle shots of: Curly Flat Chardonnay from the Macedon Ranges, and Adi Badenhorst’s Dassikop Steen 2015 (my last! and what a wine!)
