I really enjoyed Athens. On the first evening we popped into Mr Vertigo, a brilliant wine shop (and importing company) run by Giannis Signos (above). He gave us a taste of some Greek wines from a producer in Cephalonia, and they were just brilliant.

Here’s a written version of a talk I gave to Greek wine producers in Athens yesterday. It’s not exactly what I said (I never read talks); but rather it’s something written around the points on my powerpoint presentation.

I really liked this Greek white, which is a varietal Moschofilero, from grapes grown at 650 m altitude, made by Semeli winery in the Mantinia region. It has personality and character, but it’s also really well made.

12.5% alcohol. Really stylish, exotic dry white with fresh melon and pear fruit nose. Lovely [...]

The white is made from Muscat of Alexandria, which is a traditional [...]
£10 in your pocket, and looking to pop some white wine? You can’t do much better than this. It’s from Santorini: I’ve never been, but apparently the vines are grown in some of the most unusual and distinctive ways you can imagine (see this google image search for examples), in the island’s volcanic soils.

For when the sun shines again in this stop, stop, start, stop summer, let me recommend two lovely, affordable wines from The Wine Society. Wines like this are in a real sweet spot for me: they have personality and give pleasure, and they are priced so I can enjoy them whatever the occasion.
