I really like this. It’s a Morgon from Julien Sunier, who has been making his own wines only since 2008. He farms three hectares in Morgon, Regnie and Fleurie, working organically. Always good to find decent, natural tasting French wines that I can afford. Here are a couple imported directly by London merchant Roberson. Both are organic. Julien Sunier Beaujolais-Villages 2008 Georges Descombes is one of the band of natural wine guys currently active in Beaujolais. The natural Beaujolais wines like this are by far the most interesting expressions of Beaujolais, and are in the same league of interest as serious Burgundies, in my opinion. Descombes works without sulfur dioxide during vinification (there’s a nice report [...] Beaujolais is a bit unfashionable these days. So many of the wines failed to deliver what Gamay from this part of the world is known for – ‘fun’. Kermit Lynch famously described Beaujolais as the ‘one-night stand of wines.’ Fortunately, with the 2009 vintage, Beaujolais seems to have rediscovered fun, and mingled in a hint of [...] Whatever happened to Beaujolais?
