A great value white wine from Spain

verd albera 2010 emporda, spain

This has to be my best value white of the year. It’s part of an excellent offer of Iberian whites by the Wine Society, and after I tasted it I looked it up and was amazed to find it was under £10 by quite a distance.

Marti Fabra Verd Albera 2010 Emporda, Spain
13.5% alcohol. Beautifully aromatic – quite exotic even – with bold flavours of pear, melon and spice, with some appealing minerality. A really delicious wine that’s textured and fruit driven. I would have thought Viognier, but it’s actually a blend of white Grenache and Muscat. 91/100 (£7.95 The Wine Society)

  1. I am Catalan. And without chauvinism, this white is spectacular and reflects very well the Empordà land, rough, dominated by the north wind, that gives life. It is a typical white wine that goes well because it’s sweet shooting. Not. It has volume, has personality, has character. And must be accompanied with a good black rice or a stew of monkfish. Ah! Do not say it is a Spanish wine. Please. By God! Catalonia is not Spain.
Sóc català. I sense fer xovinisme, aquest blanc és espectacular i reflecteix molt bé la terra empordanesa, aspra, dominada per la tramuntana, que li dóna vida. No és típic vi blanc que passa bé perquè és tirant a dolç. No. Té volum, té personalitat, té caràcter. I s’ha d’acompanyar amb un bon arròs negre o un suquet de rap. Ah! No digueu que és un vi espanyol. Si us plau. Per Déu! Catalunya no és Espanya.

  2. Really good wine, fresh, not too sweet, easy to drink, goes well with fish or even a paella.
And please , remember, Catalonia is not Spain. That wine is a Catalan wine.
    Cheers to you all !
