A remarkable Chenin Blanc

This is a superb wine. Now almost 7 years old, and developing beautifully. At 13% alcohol, it’s not one of the overblown, ripe styles. Instead, it’s fresh, ripe and textured with some pear and pith notes, as well as a hint of white peach. It’s Jean Daneel Signature Chenin Blanc 2004, from South Africa’s Stellenbosch region.

It’s a wine that’s offering current pleasure, but also the potential for further development. I was really impressed by this. Not sure whether it is available in the UK.

The 2006 Signature can be found at sawines online c.£20. I would be interested to know how this wine or one of its siblings fared at the recent controversial Decanter tasting of SA Chenin, if it was entered.

  • One of my favourite all time White SA wines along with CP’s Isleidh. I have bought cases of them. Both are imported by James Yeo at Specialist Vineyards. .co.uk I think.

  • Yes, two fabulous wines – also Quoin Rock Nicobar 2007 is quite special, and 2007 Steenberg Magna Carta is no slouch

This sounds so good. Is there anything comparable in the US to this wine?
