Southbank Estate Sauvignon Blanc now at £3

Totally absurd price for what is a very good wine: I’ve discovered that Asda are now selling through their remaining stocks of Southbank Estates 2009 Sauvignon Blanc (an estate-bottled Sauvignon from Marlborough, not some bulk shipped tactical ‘soft’ brand) at just £3. The 2009 is better than the 2008, which is the one I previously reported as being sold for £4.  I confess to buying three bottles: Kiwi Sauvignon is a staple chez Goode.

  • Just made the change to your new site address on my wine blog. I had been using the older one. Things are looking good. I always enjoy your posts. Do you find Word Press that much better? I’m still on BlogSpot.

Well, this is being dumped. Look at the figures – subtract duty, vat, shipping, handling and transport and you have a wine which is being valued at 65p before margins apply. Which is unfeasible. Factor in the historically low exchange rate and presumably you have a wine which is surely being sold well below cost value. And we’re talking about 2009 vintage, not the maligned ’08. I’m sure growers in New Zealand must roll out their eyes when they read about these ridiculous stock-clearing stunts.
