Chateau Rahoul, an excellent white Bordeaux

Rahoul

The older I get, the more I like white Bordeaux. It’s such an interesting expression of Sauvignon Blanc (often bolstered with a bit of Semillon, of course), usually barrel fermented. My experience is that barrel-fermented Sauvignon ages really well, and – as long as the oak isn’t overpowering – it drinks well young, too. So it’s a useful sort of wine. And with the exception of a few celebrity white Bordeaux (Haut Brion Blanc, Smith Haut Lafitte and Chevalier, for example). This is a really good one.

Chateau Rahoul 2010 Graves, Bordeaux, France
13.5% alcohol. Wonderful nose of grapefruit, subtle vanilla, toast, quince, pear and fennel. The palate is fresh and zippy with nice depth of pear/citrus fruit and well integrated oak. Quite serious and ageworthy. 92/100 (£16 The Wine Society)

  1. I couldn’t agree more! There are some incredible wooded sauvignon blancs/semillons from Graves and Pessac-Leognan. They seem to slip under the radar compared to say the whites of Burgundy. And the 2010s seem to be particularly good. Will look out for the Rahoul.

  2. To answer Richard’s query, Jo Locke, The Wine Society’s Bordeaux buyer, has just confirmed that this wine is still in stock. It should be back on the website shortly. In the meantime, orders can be made by telephone 01438 740222 or email memberservices@thewinesociety.com

  3. Further to Sue’s comment, please note that this wine will not be available for sale either via the phones or our website until 23rd September. Thank you for your patience.

  4. It’s too bad that White Bordeaux’s do not have more popularity; It seems as though they often get overlooked for their red counterparts. Personally, I find them to be a nice change from the many predictable Sauvignon Blancs out there. I can’t wait to give this one a try!

  5. I have 2 bottles of this (2010) sitting on my wine rack. When would you recommend it is drunk as I would hate them to go past their best!
