It’s always good to stumble across wines that over-deliver for their price point. Here are two that I tried today and was impressed by.
Tenuta Roveglia Lugana 2011 Italy
From the shores of Lake Garda, this is a really fresh white, made from the Trebbiano (aka Ugni Blanc) grape variety. Crisp, tight and steely with lovely citrus/grapefruit zestiness and an almost spicy finish. Fresh, bracing and delicious with good acidity. 88/100 (£6.98 Asda)
Marques de Borba Tinto 2011 Alentejo, Portugal
From Joao Portugal Ramos, this is a blend of Alicante, Aragonez and Touriga Nacional with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s sweet, ripe and lush with good concentration, great definition and nice freshness. Sleek, smooth and pure but also vivid and vital, with a bit of grip on the finish. So drinkable. 89/100 (£9.60 Tanners)
Hang on! Why is this 1 off 90/100 huh?
Hi Jamie, the Zenato version of this can be good too, When looking the variety up, I did find references suggesting Trebbiano from Garda is in fact Verdicchio. Reckon this may explain why it tastes a lot better than most other Trebbiani.
