Tourónio, an impressive Douro red

I love the Douro, and I’m delighted to be going out there again in a couple of weeks. So much is happening, in the relatively new region for table wines. Here’s a new wine from Quinta de Tourais in the Baixo Corgo – the first bit you come to arriving from Porto, which is also the cooler, more rainy bit. This is a very good wine, and it’s not particularly expensive. (Online, I found the 2008 for £13 from the ever excellent The Sampler)

Tourónio 2009 Douro
A blend of 40% Touriga Nacional, 40% Tinta Roriz, 15% Sousao and 5% Tinto Cao. Distinctively packaged in an enamelled bottle. Sweet, appealing cherry and plum fruit nose with a fresh, mineral streak adding interest. The palate is supple and midweight with sweet cherry and plum fruit. Well balanced with some mineral notes and a sense of elegance, showing spice and grip under the fruit. 90/100 (UK agent Indigo Wines)

  1. Tasted this today – a lovely wine. I love the fragrant sort of inky/parma violet backing that the fruit gets – is that from the touriga?
