Mirabilis, a serious new Douro wine

mirabilis
This is a new wine from Douro property Quinta Nova, which I visited back in March 2010. It’s made from old vines (interestingly, not Touriga Nacional, the celebrity grape, which used to be quite rare in old vineyards), and has an unusual bottle shape – short and squat like an 18th century bottle.

What do I like about this? I think it’s terribly young, and needs a lot of time to show its best, but there’s freshness and elegance. And while there’s considerable structure, the tannins are quite fine and not at all angular. Above all, it isn’t over-ripe, although it still weighs in at 14.5% alcohol. Only time will tell, but I think this will age really well.

Quinta Nova Mirabilis Grande Reserva 2011 Douro, Portugal
Lovely freshness here: vivid aromatic raspberry and black cherry nose with some minerals and spice. The palate is fresh and vivid with tight berry and black cherry fruit, with good acidity. I really like the freshness, and rather than being a monster, this is quite elegant. There’s lots of structure and some well integrated oak, but the tannins are really fine grained. A serious effort with lovely focus. 94/100
