A couple more Portuguese wine discoveries

The great thing about visiting Portugal is that there are always more wines to discover. Here are a couple from this week.

First, up, a couple of Dao wines from new producer Julia Kemper. These are organic, and delicious. The red is really fresh, intense and vivid – still youthful and showing a little oak, but with real potential. The white is perhaps even better, with a hint of matchstick reduction and lovely fruit intensity.

We had these with dinner on Friday, held at a restaurant next to the free-slowing Mondego river. Pictured is the main course – a deliciously rustic knuckle of pork.

Then, yesterday, we had lunch at Cova de Lopa in Linhares. The food was fantastic, with the highlight being a brilliant grilled pulvo (octopus). The wine that caught my attention here was .beb, a stylishly packaged red from the Alentejo, made by Susana Esteban. It’s really fresh and vivid, with more definition and brightness of fruit than most of its peers.
