A lovely, fresh expression of Malbec from a country not normally associated with it: New Zealand. And at a penny under a tenner, this is cracking value for money.

14.5% alcohol. Unoaked, this is a vivid red/purple colour. Highly aromatic with joyful, fresh aromas of damson and raspberry. The palate is juicy and vivid with lively raspberry fruit and high acidity. Lovely bright fruit dominates here, and grippy tannin adds a savoury dimension. 90/100 (£9.99 Marks & Spencer)

Wow I always had troubles with Malbec so I am excited to try this!
Interesting that this comes from Nelson. In Hawke’s Bay they are making some very good malbecs, such as Mills Reef’s “Elspeth”, and the grape is often blended into the top “Bordeaux blends” (e.g. Clearview’s “Enigma”). They even make some decent rose out of it.
