I can’t think of many wines more appropriate for this festive season that this little beauty. It’s a Tokaji, from the wonderful Disznókő estate. Lovely complexity, with a bit of evolution, and lots of detail in the flavours. It was a warm year, but the region was less affected than many in Europe, and harvest was a month earlier than normal. This wine is drinking perfectly now, but there’s no need to hurry to consume it.
Disznókő Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos 2003 Hungary
Lively and complex, with powerful flavours of citrus, peach, apricot and spice, with some fresh tangerine notes offsetting the sweetness. There are also deeper, richer flavours of nuts, honey and wax. It’s really complex and powerful, but also has some delicacy and precision. Despite the richness, there’s no risk of cloying sweetness here. A fabulous wine, and this is probably just the right time to drink it. 95/100
