On the road, finishing in the Douro

Quick update from Lisbon airport, at the end of a really good trip. Yesterday was busy: we started off in Toro, drove to Bierzo (some lovely wines from Victor Arroyo – Mencia and Godello), then up to Rias Baixas (visiting Adegas D’Altamira, who make three different kinds of Albariño).

Then we drove down to the Douro to stay overnight at Quinta Nova de Nossa Senorha da Carmo (simply Quinta Nova is easier!). This morning we tasted and visited the vineyards, before heading back to Lisbon.

It has been a diverse but interesting trip, and I’ve learned quite a bit. I’m also about a stone heavier – the peril of travelling through wine country. Pictures: top – Pinhao in the Cima Corgo of the Douro; middle – Quinta Nova, with one of Pombal’s standing stones demarcating the region, dating from 1758; bottom – an old vine at Quinta Nova.

Jamie – Sounds like a great trip, though quite quite a bit of driving for just a few days. Looking forward to the Toro and Bierzo write-ups…

    Cheers,
    Andrew
