I was delighted to find a spattering of new wines from the southwest of France in The Sampler yesterday, when I attended the icon tasting. I bought one – a Marcillac- and drank it last night. It was fabulous. Probably a bit more refined and less edgy than the Domaine du Cros that I’ve raved about in the past, but it is a fair bit more expensive.
Domaine du Mioula Marcillac 2009 southwest France
12% alcohol. Attractive, pure, ripe supple cherry and berry fruits with some grainy, subtly gravelly, iron-like savoury notes. Lovely pure cherry fruit here. It’s quite like a New Zealand Pinot Noir in weight, and not at all rustic. Beautifully balanced and quite elegant. It has local personality, but some polish, too. 92/100 (£13.20 The Sampler)

Marcillac is an appellation from Aveyron (my region) ! It’s an unrecognized AOC but very interesting one. Do you know that the majority of the vineyard is terraced ?
Domaine du Mioula also produces a very good white wine named Terres d’Ors. Made with Chardonnay, Muscadelle and Chenin, this wine is fermented in barrels. I had the chance to visit the estate with Mr Angles – the owner – and it was a real pleasure.
You say it’s got local personality – aren’t they the ones who open supermarkets in your home town?
