A brilliant white Beaujolais

Beaujolais is becoming a very interesting wine region. Most of it is red, of course, but here’s a great white example that offers amazing value for money.

Jean-Paul Brun Chardonnay Classic Terres Dorees 2011 Beaujolais, France
12% alcohol. Complex, rounded, nutty and toasty with mineral notes as well as apple and pear fruit on the nose. The palate is rounded and textured, showing pear, spice, white peach and almond character. Notes of honey and lemon, too – just lovely. 92/100 (£11 Savage Selection)

  1. One of the best wines i have had in the past few years was a 1989 white Beaujolais-village picked up in a Roberson sale. Better than any Meursault i have ever had……though that maybe my primitive palate!

  2. White Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages are great: they are rare as they only represent a very small percentage of the Beaujolais vineyard and they are an incredible value for money compared with their counterparts from Burgundy. They are produced from chardonnay grapes and in a blind tasting situation, it is difficult to find the difference with most Bourgogne blanc.
