Two Champagnes to celebrate the premiership win

I was born in the season when Manchester City last won the league. We’re talking football here (association football, or soccer, for those outside Europe).

It was called the 1st Division then. Since it has been renamed the Premiership. I’ve always been a City fan. I was born in Manchester and my family background is blue (City play in a sky blue strip). For as long as I can remember, City have been in the shadow of their Manchester rivals, United. Today they won the league beating United by goal difference in the most dramatic way possible.

City needed to match the result of Manchester UTD to win. With just a couple of minutes to go, they were losing, and scored twice in remarkable circumstances to snatch victory from the jaws to defeat. There has never been a premier league season like this; there has never been an end to a season like this.

This victory called for Champagne. Two bottles broached.

Champagne Laurent Perrier 2002
A full yellow/gold colour. Highly aromatic with notes of toast, pear and citrus with some pithiness. The palate is taut and crisp with powerful citrus, hazelnut, grapefruit pith, white peach and toast notes. Youthful and intense, this is fine, structured and savoury. 92/100

Champagne Thienot Brut Rose NV
Pale salmon pink colour. Lovely subtle cherry and rose petal nose. The palate has rounded, toasty fruit. It’s delicate and precise with nice acidity. There’s a bit of structure here, too. 90/100

  1. Very pleased they won but cannot imagine why you would celebrate with such awful wine.
Surely the result deserved something like a fine burgundy

  2. As a United fan I could feel robbed by those late goals, but in reality we gave it away both by the 6-1 drubbing earlier in the season and by the 4-4 at Everton. You were the better team over the season, but we’ll be back!

I drowned my sorrows with Glenmorangie.

  3. We were screaming and yelling here- my wife is a long suffering City fan, who made her smug pupils (United supporters from London? For shame!) watch the last four minutes today. Back in the north her mother knew they’d won when she heard a sudden roar that turned Reddish blue. Forza Citeh! And isn’t that Vincent Kompany a likeable young man, albeit one married to a red.

  4. I thought you might be celebrating.

Just 1 question, if Man City won by a comfortable 3 – nil margin from half time would you have celebrated with the same ?

Either way, a great season where on the last weekend there was more attention on the sharp end of the league as opposed to the bottom

  5. Born in Manchester to a red family but always followed blue. I have lived in Australia since 1978. Am a little suprised that Denis Tuart is no longer in the team. Celebrated with Thousand Candles and an Oakridge 864 Chardonnay.

Yes, I live in the Yarra Valley.
