Grüner Veltliner is one of my favourite white grape varieties. It’s pretty much restricted to Austria, although New Zealand has now started paying attention to this variety, which has a distinctive white pepper signature note.
This is a really good example from the Wienviertel region, close to Vienna.
R & A Pfaffl Grüner Veltliner Hundsleiten 2011 Wienviertel, Austria
From a steeply sloped vineyard with clay, sandstone and quartz soils. Delicate yet decisive nose showing sweet pear and white peach fruit with a some white pepper freshness. The palate shows rounded ripe pear and peach fruit and attractive pepperiness. I love the combination of sweet grapey, fruity richness with the fresh pepper notes. There’s even a hint of thyme here. A lovely wine. 93/100

Gruner is great! I love the terroir bottlings from Kurt Angerer. Loam is probably my favourite, but the Eichenstaude is pretty good too.
Also some great new Gruners from the Adelaide Hills wine region in South Australia. Hahndorf Hill has been a bit of a pioneer in this regard.
The origin of this fantastic wine is called “Weinviertel”, not “Wienviertel”. It has nothing to do with “Wien”, how Vienna is called in German. The name comes from “Wein”, which means – surprise, surprise 😉 – “wine”.
