A delicious Zinfandel from Western Australia

Laithwaites have unearthed a gem here. It’s a wine that surprised me: I’m not a fan of Zinfandel normally, but this is really elegant and utterly delicious, and it’s at a good price. It was sourced by well known consultant and ex-LVMH dude Dr Tony Jordan, and Laithwaites aren’t allowed to say which winery it comes from. But there’s only one producer I can think of in Western Australia who makes Zinfandel, and Jordan used to be involved with them – Cape Mentelle. So it could be them.

Laithwaites Limited Release Margaret River Zindandel 2010 Western Australia
Very sweetly perfumed with notes of cherry and plums, as well as hints of juniper and mint. Lovely fresh, elegant palate with bright cherry fruit and subtle tea notes. Really precise with lovely freshness. Quite Pinot-like even, with plenty of elegance. 91/100 (£8.99 Laithwaites here)

  1. And checking online the Cape Mentelle Zin currently available is the 09 and is 15% abv. I’m definitely leaning towards McHenry Hohnen for the producer of this wine.

  2. Other Western Australian Zin producers include Arimia Margaret River, Chittering Valley Winery Perth Hills, Jarrah Ridge Winery Perth Hills, Lion Mill Vineyards Perth Hills, McHenry Hohnen Margaret River, Stellar Ridge Margaret River, Virage Margaret River, Watershed Wines Margaret River, Wise Wine Margaret River, plus a handful in Pemberton and Geographe.

  3. Jamie.. there are many elegant zinfandels you would love but are prob not avail in UK.. next time you are on the West coast of the US try the Dashe Enfante Terrible, Nalle,Harvest Moon and others..

  4. I always find a weak spot for sweeter berry fruit Zinfandels, although I do appreciate a good Australian version.

What does everyone else think? Has anyone tried a Californian Zinfandel recently?
