A mechanical pruner at work
in the Alentejo (Portugal). This
reduces growth down to long spurs, which are
then pruned back to just two or three buds by hand. Using this sort of
pre-pruning shortens the job
massively, but it only works where the vines are pruned with a permanent
cordon (the main single
horizontal branches from which the vertical shoots grow). If you want to cane
prune (also known as
rod and spur), this all needs to be done by hand. Picture taken December 2006.
